New Apartment? You Might Need These

New apartment? You might need these…

My daughter is moving into a new apartment. She had an apartment in college, but this is her first apartment post-college, and she’ll be in New York, where space is limited. She is excited, and so am I, but there are some things we decided she would need that she didn’t need at a college apartment.

  • Countertop nugget ice maker. The refrigerator in her new apartment doesn’t have an ice maker, and ice trays take too long to actually make ice. Therefore, we got her a countertop nugget ice maker. It makes ice in 5-7 minutes, and it’s pretty compact, so it doesn’t take up a lot of counter space. It would be great in any apartment or at the bar in any home, if you don’t have a built-in ice maker. Or maybe you just like nugget ice in your beverages? Purchase here.
  • Windowless Portable Air Cooler. Running an air conditioner can be expensive. I know that for sure, because our power bill quadruples in July and August in North Carolina. Even New York summers are hot, so I got a windowless portable air cooler for her room. She is accustomed to sleeping in our cold house at night, so she can run the air cooler at night to keep the power bill from escalating. The one we got doesn’t require a window tube, hence the word “windowless,” and it’s supposed to drop the temperature anywhere from 5 degrees to 16 degrees in a small room.   • Shoe racks. A friend gave us her daughter’s stackable wood shoe racks to put in the bottom of a closet. Before, when our daughter was in college, she had an over-the-door shoe hanger but didn’t use it like she should have. Because she likes to keep the shoes in the bottom of her closet, I’m hoping this will work better. Purchase some similar to the ones we have here.
  • Towel/linens storage. In her college apartment, she had plenty of room and had her own bathroom. Towels could be stored there, and linens could be stored in her huge walk-in closet. Fast forward to her NY apartment, and she is sharing a bathroom with a roommate and has a much smaller closet. Therefore, she needs a place to store those items. We opted for a wicker hamper that will fit inside one end of her closet. She will actually have two hampers: one for dirty laundry and another for the towels/linens…one at each end of the closet. We found a great deal on Amazon here.
  • Tension closet rod. Because she has only one closet, and it it only has one long bar in it, we decided to purchase a tension closet rod, so she will be able to hang more clothes, even if it’s just a lower rod for hanging pants. That will free up some space on the other rod. We found a great one on Amazon. You can see it and purchase here.
  • Thermal Insulated Blackout Curtains. These are great for so many reasons. First, the obvious: they block sunlight when you don’t want it. But also, they block some noise and provide some level of insulation, trapping air between the curtain and the window to help maintain desired temperature in the room. We are big fans of blackout curtains, and my daughter loved the ones she had in her college apartment. Unfortunately, they are too long for her new apartment, so we ordered new ones. We need to just cover the window, because the air conditioning unit is below the window, and we definitely don’t want to cover that! We purchased these.
  • Clothes Drying rack. Some clothes just don’t need to go in the dryer: workout clothes, cottons, etc. And some clothes can be handwashed in the sink and hung to dry…like underwear, swimsuits, and lightweight blouses. Therefore, we got our girl a drying rack. There are different kinds. Some people prefer the tripod version while others prefer the standard ones. Get a tripod drying rack from Amazon here.   • Folding step stool. Because our daughter is only about 5’5″, we knew she would need a step stool to reach the upper shelf in her closet. Therefore, we got her a folding step stool. It will come in handy when she needs to stack sweaters or whatever she wants to put up there. Purchase here.

We will be moving her into the apartment in two days. I’m sure, as we go, I will come up with more items we need, and I will share with you!

Preparing for the Post-College Move/Job

Preparing for the post-college move/job.

The movers arrive in ten days. They will scoop up a bed, mattress, dresser, night stands, vanity/desk, chair for said vanity/desk, some wardrobe boxes, and some boxes full of our daughter’s personal effects and drive them to New York. “Personal effects” sounds like a prison term, but whatever. There’s not a whole lot to move, fortunately, because her roommate has her own stuff and some living room stuff too. I’m guessing I will buy whatever living room and kitchen stuff they still need after they get there. Or maybe I should say “after I get there.” There is a very real possibility that I will have to be there to accept my daughter’s belongings when they arrive in New York, because she might still be enjoying a long weekend at Lollapalooza in Chicago.

A mother’s work is never done.

The movers pick up in ten days, and once they pick up, they will call me to let me know when they will be arriving at her apartment in New York. Chances are, I will have less than 24 hours to get there to meet them, so I will keep a bag packed (much like when we were awaiting her arrival into the world) so I can hop on a plane immediately and get there. And I will wait for them. However, I’m not sleeping in the apartment, because I like to sleep in a meat locker, and they just won’t have that apartment cold enough for me. I will stay in a hotel, thank you very much. If my daughter isn’t there yet, I will supervise the delivery of the furniture and boxes without her. We have drawn up plans for how/where she wants her bedroom furniture placed. If she is there, I will be there for moral support and to take her shopping for whatever she needs. Not gonna lie…moving to New York isn’t cheap. Heck, moving anywhere is expensive, but moving to New York is especially expensive.

Add in all the time required to move there. First, we had to find an apartment. That can take a while, but we were very fortunate in that regard, as she has a lovely roommate who had boots on the ground, and we (she) found an apartment pretty darn quickly. We paid the deposit, filled out the application, went through the application process (not fun), and secured the apartment in a good part of town. Don’t get me wrong…there was a lot of worry involved for me. I had visions of never finding an apartment, but our “boots on the ground” came through! It’s actually a pretty roomy apartment by New York standards, and I am so excited for them to live there. They will even have a skyline view, a rooftop garden, a 24-hour doorman, a gym, and their very own balcony. Win! We haven’t actually seen the apartment yet, but the “boots on the ground” did send us a video, and we were happy with it. Additionally, I have spent time communicating with the movers, and I have had to communicate with them repeatedly. If you ever plan to move to New York or plan to move one of your kids to New York, you should know in advance that the movers will need to send a Certificate of Insurance to move you in. Otherwise…no dice. The building will not let them in without it. It’s not difficult to get from most movers, but it’s something you have to do. Since our daughter is working at an internship in Charlotte this summer, I have tried to help her with some other things too…like getting the electricity at the apartment put in her name. The roommate secured the wifi service.

I find myself feeling sort of how I felt when we were getting ready to send her off to college for freshman year. The foyer is filling up with boxes just like it did then. The garage is holding the furniture we ordered. There are boxes everywhere as I wait for her to pack them with her “personal effects.” Fortunately, she banks with a large international bank, so she won’t have to open a new account after she moves. She will need to find a new doctor and dentist after she settles in, but she has seen both locally in the past month, so she should be good to go until she finds someone.

And honestly, we won’t know what we are missing in the apartment until we know what we are missing. At that point, we can run to TJ Maxx, Target, Home Goods, or somewhere else in the city and get what she needs…toiletries, paper goods, etc. I’m not paying movers to haul toilet paper or cleaning supplies from North Carolina to New York.

In 1989, when my parents moved me to Atlanta from Alabama after graduating from college, I had already secured the apartment on my own and had all the utilities put in my name. In fact, I was already living in the apartment when they drove over with a sofa, a TV, and a few other small items. I purchased a bed plus boxspring and mattress, so that’s basically what I had in the apartment. That’s all I had for a little while. I didn’t care. I was living in my own version of the “big city of dreams” and loving life.

I hope our daughter will love life in The Big Apple. I hope she will settle in as quickly as I settled into life in Atlanta way back when. I pray she will stay safe and keep her head on a swivel.

As soon as I get her settled in, my husband and I plan to take a vacation we postponed because of this move. I remember that I went on vacation as soon as we got her settled into college freshman year too. I have a feeling I will appreciate the relaxation more than ever. Hopefully, she will stay settled in a for a while. Every move just ages me a little more. Like I said, a mother’s work is never done.

Sorority Rush Shoes

Yes, it’s June, and that means lots of young ladies are preparing for sorority rush. Most big southern schools do rush just before or just after the fall semester starts, and girls need to be well-prepared before they get there.

As you solicit recommendations, purchase rush dresses, fill your rush bag, and get prepared to outfit your dorm room, make sure you remember to get good shoes for rush. (Hint: the ones in the featured photo at the top of the article are NOT the shoes you need!) What does that mean? I means you need to have comfortable shoes that look good. No, I don’t mean they have to be “old lady” practical shoes. They need to be pretty shoes you can wear all day without blisters/discomfort.

Obviously, there are different rounds of recruitment and different footwear needs. For the first round or two at big schools, the girls generally wear shorts/skorts with a t-shirt provided by Panhellenic. With that, you can wear comfortable flat sandals or sneakers. Honestly, I recommend clean, fashionable sneakers for those days. You know what’s in style these days. When my daughter participated in recruitment four years ago (how can that be???), it was Alexander McQueen, Golden Goose, etc. I think most of the girls wear Hokas and On Clouds now, but do what’s right for you.

On other days, you’ll want to wear a heel. I do not recommend spiky heels. I recommend block or wedge heel on an open-toe sandal. (Make sure your toes look good!) Here are some from Amazon I recommend, in a variety of price ranges:

FIRST, COMFORTABLE SHOES TO WEAR BETWEEN PARTIES…

Archies Flip Flops. I sincerely cannot promote these enough. These are the best flip flops ever! I’m not even a big flip flop lover, because I feel like they generally are not good for your feet. However, Archies are different! They offer outstanding arch support, and I actually feel great when I wear them! I highly recommend these for wear between parties, to give your feet/legs/back a break from heels. They come in a variety of colors, and they are priced at just $40. Purchase them for everyone in your family, but especially for that daughter who is about the participate in recruitment. Get them here.

AND NOW FOR THE PARTY SHOES:

Stuart Weitzman Nudist Block Sandals. These are a little pricey, but they are the best, most-versatile heeled sandals I have ever owned. I have a pair in the Adobe color and a pair of the gold. I wear the Adobe ones with dresses and jeans. It’s the perfect heel and a clean look. Your daughter could get these shoes and wear them with any dress for recruitment. Highly recommend. Priced at $420.75, they aren’t cheap, but they will be worth every penny, if you can get them without breaking the bank. Purchase here.

Sam Edelman Classic Daniella. For a similar heel with a much better price tag, you can get the Sam Edelman Classic Daniella. To me, a soft gold shoe is a neutral. You can wear it with anything, and it could be worn with almost any dress during recruitment. Or maybe you’d like the white version? It’s perfect for summer. Both colors are priced at $140 (at time of writing), making them a bargain. I have some of the gold ones, and I wear them with dresses and jeans too. They’re comfortable, fashionable, and versatile. Cole Haan Fisherman Wedge. This is a stylish wedge, but it’s also comfortable. I know, because I have them and love them. Sometimes, wedges can look clunky, but these are more sleek. And no one will know you paid less that $100 for them! Cute with dresses, but also cute with pants after recruitment is over. Cole Haan makes a great product at reasonable prices. Purchase here.

Stuart Weitzman Georgie Espadrille Wedges. It’s no secret that I love Stuart Weitzman, so there’s no surprise that I’m featuring one of their wedges. This one is comfortable and perfect for late summer! Cute with dresses for recruitment and also cute with pants when rush is over. Priced at $380, they’re expensive, but generally speaking, my Stuart Weitzman shoes last forever and are timeless. Purchase here.

Amazon Essential Two Strap Sandal. If you want to keep the price down, Amazon Essentials offers some great products. I do not have these, but they get great reviews, and with a price of $20.25 at time of writing, you can’t beat it. The heel is 2 1/8 inches, so not too high but not too low, and the color is perfect for wearing with various dresses. Purchase here.

You’ll likely notice that all these shoes can be worn with just about anything. While some people like to wear standout shoes during recruitment, a chapter is not going to want you because you wore the most stand-out shoes. In my opinion, it’s best to have a couple pairs of shoes that will work with everything.

Your Sorority Recruitment “Rush Bag”

Your sorority recruitment “rush bag.”

I know it’s only June, and most high school graduations haven’t even happened yet. Congratulations to all the 2026 graduates! You’ve finished that big part of life, and now you’re starting something new! Maybe you’re entering the working world. Maybe you’re going to trade/vocational school. Maybe you’re traveling for a while. Maybe you’re going to college. Whatever you’re doing, best of luck to you! If you’re planning to participate in sorority recruitment at a big, southern school, it’s time to start thinking about your “Rush bag.”

What’s a “Rush bag,” you ask? Well, it’s a water-resistant handbag that holds all the necessities for keeping one’s self fresh during a long August day outdoors in any southern state. What kind of bag should you use? What things should go in it? Fear not, for I have answers.

My own daughter rushed at a big, southern school in 2022, and much to her surprise, she used almost every item I put into her rush bag. She thanked me for taking care of business for her.

For the bag itself, I recommend waterproof or, at least, water resistant.

  • Rush bag. If you know a young lady who is graduating from high school and planning to participate in sorority recruitment at a big, southern university, a “rush bag” makes a great gift. She will definitely need one! You’ll want to start with a water-resistant bag with a zipper closure. These bags will be left outside sorority houses on the ground when they go inside, so they don’t need to be fancy bags. I found a perfect one that comes in multiple colors on Amazon for about $27 here. (See photo at bottom of page.) If you opt for that one, I think the medium size is great. If you want to go with a Longchamp-style nylon bag from Amazon…shop here. If you want to add the necessities for recruitment, you can add all of these or some of these items:
    • Handheld, battery-operated fan. It’s hot in the south. The heat and humidity are no joke. She will need a fan. Our daughter used this one last year. And at $7.99 (at time of writing), it’s priced right and comes in a variety of colors.
    • Archies brand flip flops. Your daughter will want some comfortable shoes to wear between parties, and she can slip a pair of Archies right into her bag. These awesome flip flops offer great arch support, and they are designed to absorb shock. They might look like regular flip flops, but I know how much better they are, because I have some! They come in lots of colors, so pick one she likes. Highly recommend! And when rush is over, she can use them as shower shoes or anytime! Purchase for $40 here.

    • Waterproof folding changing pad. Sounds crazy, I know, but the girls will be wearing dresses and will need to sit on the ground some during the day. They can save their dresses from grass stains or water spots with this. We got our daughter this one.
    • Blotting papers. All that heat and humidity produces sweat…blot away the shine with blotting papers. Get some from NYX at Amazon for just $6 here.
    • Insulated Water Bottle. They’ll need cold water each day. Pick a water bottle from Amazon here.
    • Hand sanitizer. This is pretty obvious. We purchased our daughter some Purell travel-sized hand sanitizers to use between parties. Get them from Amazon here.
    • Small umbrella. A small folding umbrella is crucial in the south, where thunderstorms can crop up at any time. When I asked my daughter which item she used most from her rush bag, her immediate answer was “the umbrella.” We got a great one at Amazon here.
    • Tissues. These come in handy. You never know when you’ll need a tissue. Get Amazon’s Choice here.
    • Deodorant. This is a more personal item, so you can include it or not. I think it’s nice to include one just as a possibility. Personally, I love Carpe antiperspirant/deodorant, which you can buy here. They have lots of different scents, and I have tried lots of them. For women, my favorite scents are Cashmere, Fresh Powder, and Rose Water. They also offer sweat absorbing lotion for face and hands, and they actually work! I know, because I have tried them! HIGHLY RECOMMEND!
    • Breath Strips. The girls spend a lot of time going to lots of parties, and they are in crowds. They want fresh breath. Sure, they can use mints, but I think breath strips are better, because they dissolve quickly. Get them from Amazon for under $6 here.
    • Portable charger. The girls don’t want their phones to die in the middle of the day, so a portable charger comes in handy. For a small, inexpensive one, click here.
    • Lip gloss or balm. Most people have their own cosmetics they love, but Dior Addict lip products are loved by lots of people! If you don’t want to choose a color, their lip balms, maximizers, and oils come in clear versions too. See them here.
    • Band Aids. I would add some regular Band Aids from here. And some blister Band Aids from here.
    • Snack. Gatorade Recovery Protein Bars are great snacks for those hot days…something to put some pep in their step. It’s a great small snack, because it provides a little protein.My daughter loves these on the go. Get some here.
    • Safety pins. For little emergencies, these come in handy. Get a small packet here.
    • Feminine products. You definitely want to have feminine hygiene products on hand, in case you need them.
    • Painkillers such as Ibuprofen or Acetaminophen. Also, a dose of any regular medications you take.
    • Medication Sorter. If your daughter takes any regular daily medications, a med sorter can be a big help. See the one I recommend here.
    • You can include a notebook and pen, but I feel like most girls take notes on their phones.

In reality, you hope you won’t need to use the items in your rush bag, but you want to be prepared. You don’t want to have to walk around asking people if they have safety pins or Band Aids if you need one, and you definitely don’t want to use someone else’s makeup or deodorant.

I couldn’t believe she was traveling without essentials like her Zofran prescription, but she was. That’s when I first thought about a pill bottle organizer…one for her and one for me. Anyone who is a mom knows it’s always up to us to provide the meds for our families at home and when traveling.

For years, I have carried all those pill bottles (my prescriptions and over-the-counter meds) in a gallon-sized Ziploc bag. I always put that big Ziploc bag in my carry-on bag when I travel, because who wants an airline losing their medications?! On a recent trip, though, I realized that’s probably not the best way to carry my meds and vitamins. I was at a hotel, and one of my prescriptions had fallen out of the Ziploc bag into my carry-on bag. I panicked when I didn’t see it in the Ziploc, but I found it when I looked in my carry-on, and I realized I must have left an opening in the Ziploc in my haste. I needed to do something different.

When I returned home, I went online to Amazon to look for a pill bottle organizer bag. In fact, I wish I had thought of this sooner for me and my daughter! It would make a great graduation gift! I know young ladies don’t think they need to carry medications with them, but they do need to carry the essentials when they travel, and they need to have them in their dorm rooms and apartments! I wanted something soft that had slots for medications but wouldn’t take up too much room in my carry-on bag. Of course, Amazon had exactly what I needed! In fact, I have already put my medications in it, so I’m ready for a trip! I’m leaving the meds in the organizer all the time, so I can use it at home and just zip it closed when it’s time to travel.

It’s soft-sided, and it won’t take up a lot of room in my carry-on bag, but it has plenty of room for my essential meds and extras like Tylenol, Advil, nausea meds, vitamins, seasonal allergy meds, eye drops, and more. Yes, I actually carry anything I can think of, because who wants to try to find a pharmacy when you’re traveling? I like to try to have everything on hand. This particular “organizer” comes in two colors: Misty Rose and Black. I opted for the Misty Rose, because in a dark carry-on, it’s easier for my 57-yr-old eyes to see something lighter.

I like using it at home, and I am leaving town tomorrow, so it will be my first trip with my new pill organizer!

You Are Not Going to College with Your Child

You are not going to college with your child.

Why am I saying that? Well, because it seems lots of parents think they need to be involved with their child’s college experience. I’m here to tell you: you do not need to know anything, Mom. Even if you went to your child’s orientation session (or plan to attend), you don’t need to remember the information. College is your child’s job. It’s not your job. If you keep assisting your child with everything he/she needs to do/know, your child will never learn to do it on his/her own. Stick with me, and at the end of this piece, I will tell you what you can do to make your child’s transition to college more successful.

I think parents became more “helicopterish” with their college students when colleges and universities started offering orientation sessions for parents. No, just no. It makes me sick. I have said before that I went with my daughter two years ago, but I only went because it seemed everyone else was going, and I didn’t want her to feel like an orphan! I skipped out at lunch on the first day and never looked back. I simply couldn’t take it. It made me crazy that parents were asking questions kids should have been asking for themselves. If I had a second child, he/she would be going it alone, and I would feel great about it. You know why? Well, I truly believe those parent sessions are simply babysitting sessions to keep parents busy after they have traveled there. It wasn’t terrible, but I did not need to know the information they were putting out there. Where to park? I don’t care. Where to eat? I don’t care. I have already graduated from college…way back in the 1980s…and I figured it all out myself.

In 1985, my parents didn’t go to orientation with me! No way! I drove myself two hours to the university, found the dorm without a navigation system in my car, learned what I needed to know, made my schedule, and drove myself home…alone. In fact, I don’t recall seeing one parent at orientation at The University of Alabama in 1985!

And while I’m at it, allow me to also remind you that you don’t need to make your child’s academic schedule. Again, he/she needs to learn how to do it on his/her own. I see parents on the parent pages regularly talking about helping their kids make their schedules. What??? I don’t even know what classes my daughter is taking! And my parents never knew what classes I was taking!

Take a deep breath, Mom. Your child can navigate college without you. If you don’t believe that, maybe your child shouldn’t be going too far from home. Mine goes to a school 450 miles away, and it’s the greatest thing I ever did for her…letting her do college on her own. She takes care of herself and handles everything on her own, and we don’t waste our time talking about school. We talk about life and fun things, instead!

So, how can you help your child with the transition to college? I’m not a counselor or psychologist, but I am a mom, so I know a little bit. Here’s what you can do:

  • Help them prepare to outfit their dorm room. Gather what they need, and purchase what you don’t have. (Amazon Prime Days are coming up in mid-July, and there will be lots of dorm stuff on sale…a great time to get good prices! Come back to my site to get information on some special deals!)
  • Answer the phone when they call you…anytime, day or night. That first semester can be difficult, so they might need a sounding board. Be there for them. Be supportive. Be positive and encouraging.
  • Make sure they know what to do in emergency situations.
  • Provide whatever they need.
  • Most of all:

Let your little birdie fly! It might not be easy, but it’s important! They can do this! And you can too!

Don’t sweat fall sorority rush yet.

I have received three phone calls from worried friends this week. Their daughters are planning to participate in sorority rush in the fall at big southern schools, and they are worried they should be working on “rush stuff” right now. No. The answer is no. Let your daughter enjoy her senior year!

Mom, you can start thinking about the preparation, but there’s no need to be consumed by it. What can you do now? Look up which sororities have chapters at your daughter’s school. Start thinking of your friends who know your daughter; which ones were in sororities in college and would be willing and able to write recommendations for your daughter? Make a list in the notes on your phone. Or you can do like one of my friends and make a spreadsheet. I’m not Type A, so a spreadsheet was not my thing. I just made a list. Anytime you’re out and about and hear that someone is a member or alumna of a sorority, make a note of it in your phone.

If you’re thinking about hiring a rush consultant, that’s entirely up to you. We didn’t hire one for my daughter when she rushed, and she landed exactly where she wanted to be. I have lots of friends who have daughters who have rushed, and personally, I don’t know anyone who hired a consultant. And all my friends have daughters who are very happy with their rush choices. The hiring of a consultant is a personal choice.

Seriously, right now, just start compiling your recommendation list and having your daughter start working on her resumé. The girls cannot even make a complete resumé right now, because they don’t know what they’ll have to add before the end of the school year.

In May, have your daughter contact your friends who are sorority alumnae by phone, text, or email to ask them to write recommendations for her. This is something she needs to do herself, and she needs to ask people who actually know her. In a pinch, she can ask a friend of a friend. Recommendations are basically introductions of your daughter to the chapters, so she will want them to be able to write about her from personal knowledge. For example, when my neighbor’s daughter participated in “recruitment,” I was able to write a detailed recommendation/introduction of her, because I had first-hand knowledge of her personality and great attributes. Try to get recommendations to every chapter, and whatever you do, make sure your daughter does not say to any alumnae, “I’m only interested in sororities A, B, and C.” First, it sounds bad. Secondly, until rush begins, your daughter might think she knows what she likes, but she might change her mind. She also might not get invited to the ones she think she will.

You can start looking at dresses if you like. Spring dresses are coming out now, so it’s perfectly fine to start looking and even purchasing dresses she thinks she will wear. When shopping, look for fairly conservative dresses but not too conservative. Amanda Uprichard offers some great options at amandauprichard.com.

But right now, the main thing is to have rush in the back of your mind. Keep you ears and eyes open for people who can help with recommendations. Soak up every moment of senior year of high school, and enjoy having your daughter at home with you!

Here’s a rough timeline of preparation:

  • January-April: Find out which sororities have chapters on campus. Also, make a list/spreadsheet of sorority alumni who can write recommendations for your daughter. ***ALSO, make sure your daughter cleans up her social media…no alcohol or extreme photos.***
  • March-May: watch the university’s Panhellenic website to find out when registration is. At most southern universities, you can register for fall rush starting in May.
  • May-June: Your daughter can contact sorority alumni and ask for recommendations, telling them they will send their resumé soon.
  • June: create a resumé using the Canva app or another app. Distribute the resumé to the alumni who have agreed to write recommendations. Most sororities want digital recommendations now, so please don’t do old school “rush packets.” If you don’t know what that is, don’t worry about it…you don’t need to know.
  • July: make sure you have your rush wardrobe, and finish gathering everything for the “rush bag.” For more information on the rush bag, click here.
  • Late July/August: move her into her dorm and let the magic happen!

Mostly, relax. Don’t let your daughter get nervous about it.
